REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

caution
  • Because the vehicle speed detection encoder is magnetised, deposition of metal objects are prone to occur.Pay attention that no foreign objects are found on the vehicle speed detection encoder. At the same time, do not fail to check that no abnormality exists when assembling. In addition, always keep magnetic substances away from the magnetic encoder.
  • When removing and installing the front wheel hub assembly, make sure that the magnetic encoder for wheel speed detection (integrated with the inner oil seal) does not contact with surrounding parts to avoid damage.
  • When removing and installing the front wheel speed sensor, make sure that the sensor head at the end does not contact with surrounding parts to avoid damage.

Pre-removal operation
  • Front side cover removal (Refer to GROUP 51 - Under Cover Installation and Removal .)

Post-installation operation
  • Using your fingers, press the ball joint dust cover to check for a crack or damage.
  • Front side cover installation (Refer to GROUP 51 - Under Cover Installation and Removal .)
  • Headlamp aiming check (Refer to GROUP 54A - On-vehicle Service, Headlamp Aiming Adjustment .)

REMOVAL SERVICE POINTS

<<A>> LOCK NUT REMOVAL

Use the front hub & flange yoke holder (special tool: MB990767) to fix the hub as shown in the figure, and remove the lock nut.

<<B>> CALIPER ASSEMBLY REMOVAL

1.Remove the caliper assembly with the brake hose still connected.
2.Tie the removed caliper assembly with a wire at a position where it will not interfere with the removal and installation of hub knuckle assembly.

<<C>> SELF-LOCKING NUT (TIE-ROD END CONNECTION) REMOVAL

1.
caution
  • Loosen the self locking nut (tie-rod end connection) from the ball joint, but do not remove here. Use the special tool.
  • To prevent the special tool from dropping off, suspend it with a rope.
Install the ball joint remover (special tool: MB991897 or MB9920 11) as shown in the figure.

2.Turn the bolt and knob to adjust the tool jaws are parallel each other. Then, tighten the bolt by hand, and check again that the jaws are still parallel.
note While adjusting the special tool jaws to be parallel, face the knob in the direction shown.
3.Turn the bolt, and disengage the connection of ball joint.

INSTALLATION SERVICE POINTS

>>A<< HUB CAP INSTALLATION

Use the following special tools to press-fit the hub cap.

  • Installer cap (MD998812)
  • Installer 100 (MD998813)
  • Installer adapter (MD998824)

>>B<< LOCK WASHER AND LOCK NUT INSTALLATION

  • Do not apply the vehicle weight on the wheel bearing before fully tightening the locking nut. Otherwise, the wheel bearing may be broken.

1.Assemble the lock washer to the direction shown in the figure.

2.Using the front hub & flange yoke holder (special tool: MB990767), tighten the lock nut. Tighten it to the lower limit of specified torque in order to align the pin holes.
Tightening torque: 144 to 176 N·m
3.If the pin holes are not aligned, retighten up to 176 N·m. Set the split pin into the first aligned hole, and bend the split pin.
