Code No. P0011: Intake Variable Valve Timing System

FUNCTION

  • The engine-ECU controls the spool valve position of the oil feeder control valve corresponding to the driving condition of the engine and continuously changes the phase of the intake camshaft.
  • The phase angle of the intake camshaft is computed from the signal patterns of the crank angle sensor and camshaft position sensor.

TROUBLE JUDGMENT

Check Conditions
  • More than 20 seconds have passed since the engine starting sequence was completed.
  • Engine speed is more than 1,188 r/min.
  • Engine coolant temperature is more than 76°C.
Judgment Criterion
  • Difference between intake valve open timing and target intake valve open timing is more than 5°CA for 5 seconds.

PROBABLE CAUSES

  • Failed intake oil feeder control valve
  • Harness damage in intake oil feeder control valve circuit or loose connector contact
  • Failed timing sprocket operation
  • Clogged oil passage
  • Failed engine-ECU

DIAGNOSIS PROCEDURE

STEP 1. M.U.T.-III data list

  • Refer to Data List Reference Table .

  1. Item 36: V.V.T. phase angle (intake)

Q. Is the check result normal?

Intermittent malfunction (Refer to GROUP 00 - How to Use Troubleshooting/Inspection Service Points - How to Cope with Intermittent Malfunctions ).
Go to Step 2 .

STEP 2. Check intake oil feeder control valve itself.

  • Check intake oil feeder control valve itself (Refer to Oil Feeder Control Valve Check ).

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 3 .
Replace the intake oil feeder control valve.

STEP 3. Connector check: B-35 intake oil feeder control valve connector and B-29 engine-ECU connector

Q. Are the check results normal?

Go to Step 4 .
Repair or replace the connector.

STEP 4. Check harness between B-35 (terminal No. 1) intake oil feeder control valve connector and B-29 (terminal No. 1) engine-ECU connector.

  • Check output line for damage.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 5 .
Repair the damaged harness wire.

STEP 5. Connector check: A-33X engine control relay connector

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 6 .
Repair or replace the connector.

STEP 6. Check harness between A-33X (terminal No. 2) engine control relay connector and B-35 (terminal No. 2) intake oil feeder control valve connector.

note Before checking harness, check intermediate connector A-13, and repair if necessary.

  • Check power supply line for damage.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 7 .
Repair the damaged harness wire.

STEP 7. Check oil feeder control valve filter for clogging.

  • If oil feeder control valve filter is broken, check oil passage for clogging, and eliminate if necessary.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 8 .
Replace the oil feeder control valve filter.

STEP 8. Check intake camshaft sensing portion.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 9 .
Replace the intake camshaft.

STEP 9. M.U.T.-III diagnosis code

  • Reconfirmation of diagnosis code.

Q. Is diagnosis code set?

Replace the engine-ECU.
Intermittent malfunction (Refer to GROUP 00 - How to Use Troubleshooting/Inspection Service Points - How to Cope with Intermittent Malfunctions ).
