Inspection Procedure 3: Radiator Fan and Condenser Fan do not Operate <BSY>















OPERATION



  • Based on the signal from the engine coolant temperature sensor and the wheel speed sensor signal (vehicle speed signal) from the ABS-ECU <vehicles without ASC> or ASC-ECU <vehicles with ASC>, and the A/C switch signal from the A/C-ECU, the engine-ECU sends the radiator fan and condenser fan control signal to the ETACS-ECU via CAN bus line.
  • Based on the radiator fan and condenser fan control signal from the engine-ECU, the ETACS-ECU turns ON/OFF the radiator fan relay, condenser fan relay, and the fan control relay to control the rotation of the radiator fan motor and condenser fan motor.

TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION



  • If the radiator fan and condenser fan do not operate, the radiator fan motor, the condenser fan motor, the radiator fan relay, the condenser fan relay, the fan control relay, the ETACS-ECU may be defective.
  • The CAN bus line, ETACS-ECU, ABS system <vehicles without ASC> or ASC system <vehicles with ASC>, A/C system, or diesel fuel system may also be defective.

PROBABLE CAUSES



  • Malfunction of CAN bus system.
  • Damaged harness or connector.
  • Malfunction of the diesel fuel system.
  • Malfunction of the ABS system. <Vehicles without ASC>
  • Malfunction of the ASC system. <Vehicles with ASC>
  • Malfunction of the A/C system.
  • Malfunction of fusible link No. 28.
  • Malfunction of fusible link No. 29.
  • Malfunction of radiator fan relay.
  • Malfunction of condenser fan relay.
  • Malfunction of fan control relay.
  • Malfunction of radiator fan motor.
  • Malfunction of condenser fan motor.
  • Malfunction of engine compartment relay box.
  • Malfunction of ETACS-ECU.
  • Malfunction of engine-ECU.

DIAGNOSIS PROCEDURE


caution
  • If there is any problem in the CAN bus lines, an incorrect diagnosis code may be set. Prior to this diagnosis, diagnose the CAN bus lines.
  • Before replacing the ECU, ensure that the CAN bus lines is normal.

STEP 1. Check the CAN bus system diagnosis.


Using M.U.T.-III, perform CAN bus diagnosis (Refer to GROUP 54C - Explanation About The M.U.T-III CAN Bus Diagnostics ).

Q. Is the check result satisfactory?

Go to Step 2.
Repair the CAN bus lines (Refer to GROUP 54C - Troubleshooting, CAN Bus Diagnostic Table ). Then go to Step 23.

STEP 2. Check the diesel fuel system diagnosis code.


Using M.U.T.-III, perform diesel fuel system diagnosis code (Refer to GROUP 13A - Troubleshooting, Diagnosis Function ).

Q. Is any diagnosis code set?

Repair the diesel fuel system (Refer to GROUP 13A - Troubleshooting, Inspection Chart for Diagnosis Trouble Code ). Then go to Step 23 .
Go to Step 3. <Vehicles without ASC>
Go to Step 4. <Vehicles with ASC>

STEP 3. Check the ABS system diagnosis code. <Vehicles without ACS>


Using M.U.T.-III, perform ABS system diagnosis code (Refer to GROUP 35B - Troubleshooting, Diagnosis Function ).

Q. Is any diagnosis code set?

Repair the ABS system (Refer to GROUP 35B - Troubleshooting, Diagnosis Code Chart ). Then go to Step 23.
Go to Step 5.

STEP 4. Check the ASC system diagnosis code. <Vehicles with ACS>


Using M.U.T.-III, perform A/T system diagnosis code (Refer to GROUP 35C - Troubleshooting, Diagnosis Function ).

Q. Is any diagnosis code set?

Repair the ASC system (Refer to GROUP 35C - Troubleshooting, Diagnosis Code Chart ). Then go to Step 23.
Go to Step 5.

STEP 5. Check the A/C system diagnosis code.


Using M.U.T.-III, perform A/C system diagnosis code (Refer to GROUP 55 - Troubleshooting, Diagnosis Function ).

Q. Is any diagnosis code set?

Repair the A/C system (Refer to GROUP 55 - Troubleshooting, Diagnosis Code Chart ). Then go to Step 23.
Go to Step 6.

STEP 6. Check the ETACS system diagnosis code.


Using M.U.T.-III, perform ETACS system diagnosis code (Refer to GROUP 54A - ETACS, Troubleshooting, Diagnosis Function ).

Q. Is any diagnosis code set?

Repair the ETACS system (Refer to GROUP 54A - ETACS, Troubleshooting, Diagnosis Code Chart ). Then go to Step 23.
Go to Step 7.

STEP 7. Check the ETACS system data list.


Using M.U.T.-III, check the ETACS system data list (Refer to GROUP 54A - ETACS, Troubleshooting, Data List Reference Table ).

  • Item 233: Fan Lo
  • Item 234: Fan Hi

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 22.
Go to Step 8.

STEP 8. Measure the voltage at ETACS-ECU connector C-312.


(1)Disconnect the ETACS-ECU connector C-312 and measure at the harness connector side.
(2)Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.
(3)Measure the voltage between terminal No. 2 and earth, between terminal No. 8 and earth, and between terminal No. 9 and earth.
OK: Battery positive voltage.
(4)Turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" (OFF) position.
(5)Connect the ETACS-ECU connector C-312.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 14.
Go to Step 9.

STEP 9. Connectors check: A-34X radiator fan relay, A-35X condenser fan relay connector, A-36X fan control relay and C-312 ETACS-ECU connector.


Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 10.
Repair or replace the damaged connectors or replace the relay box. Then go to Step 23.

STEP 10. Check the harness between radiator fan relay connector A-34X terminal No. 1 and ETACS-ECU connector C-312 terminal No. 2, between condenser fan relay connector A-35X terminal No. 1 and ETACS-ECU connector C-312 terminal No. 8, and between fan control relay connector A-36X terminal No. 3 and ETACS-ECU connector C-312 terminal No. 9.


Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 11.
Repair the damaged harness wire or replace the relay box. Then go to Step 23.

STEP 11. Check the harness between fusible link No.28 and condenser fan relay connector A-35X terminal No. 3, between fusible link No.28 and condenser fan relay connector A-35X terminal No. 4, between condenser fan relay connector A-35X terminal No. 4 and fan control relay connector A-36X terminal No. 1, and between fusible link No.29 and radiator fan relay connector A-34X terminal No. 3.


Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 12.
Repair the damaged harness wire or replace the relay box. Then go to Step 23.

STEP 12. Check the radiator fan relay, the condenser fan relay and the fan control relay.


Refer to <6B3, BSY, 4HN>.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 13.
Replace the relay (Refer to ). Then go to Step 23 .

STEP 13. Check the fusible link No. 28 and No. 29.


Q. Is the check result normal?

It can be assumed that this malfunction is intermittent (Refer to GROUP 00 - How to Use Troubleshooting/Inspection Service Points, How to Cope with Intermittent Malfunction ).
replace the fusible link. Then go to Step 23.

STEP 14. Connectors check: A-34X radiator fan relay, A-35X condenser fan relay connector, A-36X fan control relay, A-47 radiator fan motor connector and A-43 condenser fan motor connector.


Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 15.
Repair or replace the damaged connectors or replace the relay box. Then go to Step 23.

STEP 15. Check the harness between condenser fan relay connector A-35X terminal No. 2 and condenser fan motor connector A-43 terminal No. 1, and between condenser fan motor connector A-43 terminal No. 2 and earth.


Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 16.
Repair the damaged harness wire. Then go to Step 23.

STEP 16. Check the between radiator fan relay connector A-34X terminal No. 2 and radiator fan motor connector A-47 terminal No. 1, and between radiator fan motor connector A-47 terminal No. 2 and fan control relay A-36X terminal No. 2.


Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 17.
Repair the damaged harness wire. Then go to Step 23.

STEP 17. Check the harness between fan control relay connector A-36X terminal No. 4 and condenser fan relay connector A-35X terminal No. 2, and between fan control relay connector A-36X terminal No. 5 and earth.


Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 18.
Repair the damaged harness wire. Then go to Step 23.

STEP 18. Check the harness between fusible link No.28 and condenser fan relay connector A-35X terminal No. 4, between fusible link No.29 and radiator fan relay connector A-34X terminal No. 4.


Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 19.
Repair the damaged harness wire or replace the relay box. Then go to Step 23.

STEP 19. Check the radiator fan relay, the condenser fan relay and the fan control relay.


Refer to <6B3, BSY, 4HN>.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 20.
Replace the relay (Refer to ). Then go to Step 23 .

STEP 20. Check the radiator fan motor and the condenser fan motor.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 21.
Replace the radiator fan motor or condenser fan motor (Refer to ) <BSY>. Then go to Step 23.

STEP 21. Check the ETACS system data list.


Using M.U.T.-III, check the ETACS system data list (Refer to GROUP 54A - ETACS, Troubleshooting, Data List Reference Table ).

  • Item 233: Fan Lo
  • Item 234: Fan Hi

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 22.
Replace the ETACS-ECU (Refer to GROUP 54A - ETACS, ETACS-ECU ). Then go to Step 23.

STEP 22. Check the diesel fuel system actuator test.


Using M.U.T.-III, check the diesel fuel system actuator test (Refer to GROUP 13A - Troubleshooting, Actuator Test Reference Table ).

  • Item 12: Radiator fan relay.
  • Item 13: Condenser fan relay.

Q. Is the check result normal?

It can be assumed that this malfunction is intermittent (Refer to GROUP 00 - How to Use Troubleshooting/Inspection Service Points, How to Cope with Intermittent Malfunction ).
Replace the engine-ECU (Refer to GROUP 13A - Engine-ECU ). Then go to Step 23.

STEP 23. Check the symptoms.


Q. Does the radiator fan operate?

The procedure is complete.
