Diagnosis Item 4: Diagnose shorts in the earth to CAN-C bus line



caution When servicing a CAN bus line, earth yourself by touching a metal object such as an unpainted water pipe. If you fail to do, a component connected to the CAN bus line may be broken.

  • Malfunction of the connector (short to earth inside connector)
  • Malfunction of the wiring harness (short to earth in the CAN-C main or sub bus lines)
  • Malfunction of the ECU (ETACS-ECU, or ECUs on CAN-C lines failed)

DIAGNOSIS PROCEDURE


STEP 1. Check the wiring harness between C-301 ETACS-ECU connector and C-03 joint connector (CAN2) for short to earth (resistance measurement).


caution
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal. For details refer to .
  • A digital multimeter should be used. For details refer to .
  • The test wiring harness should be used. For details refer to .
(1)Disconnect joint connector (CAN2), and measure at the wiring harness side.
(2)Resistance between C-03 joint connector (CAN2) terminal No.6 and body earth.
OK: 1 kΩ or more
(3)Resistance between C-03 joint connector (CAN2) terminal No.19 and body earth.
OK: 1 kΩ or more

Q. Is the check result normal?

YES <vehicles with ASC or AFS> : Go to Step 2.
YES <vehicles without ASC or AFS> : Go to Step 5.
NO : Go to Step 15.

STEP 2. Check the wiring harness between C-211 steering wheel sensor connector and C-03 joint connector (CAN2) for short to earth (resistance measurement).


caution
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal. For details refer to .
  • A digital multimeter should be used. For details refer to .
  • The test wiring harness should be used. For details refer to .
(1)Disconnect joint connector (CAN2), and measure at the wiring harness side.
(2)Resistance between C-03 joint connector (CAN2) terminal No.7 <LHD> or 5 <RHD> and body earth.
OK: 1 kΩ or more
(3)Resistance between C-03 joint connector (CAN2) terminal No.20 <LHD> or 16 <RHD> and body earth.
OK: 1 kΩ or more

Q. Is the check result normal?

YES <except RALLIART (vehicles with AFS) > : Go to Step 4.
YES <except RALLIART (vehicles without AFS) > : Go to Step 5.
YES <RALLIART> : Go to Step 3.
NO : Go to Step 13.

STEP 3. Check the wiring harness between C-44 AWC-ECU connector and C-03 joint connector (CAN2) for short to earth (resistance measurement).


caution
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal. For details refer to .
  • A digital multimeter should be used. For details refer to .
  • The test wiring harness should be used. For details refer to .
(1)Disconnect joint connector (CAN2), and measure at the wiring harness side.
(2)Resistance between C-03 joint connector (CAN2) terminal No.4 <LHD> or 7 <RHD> and body earth.
OK: 1 kΩ or more
(3)Resistance between C-03 joint connector (CAN2) terminal No.15 <LHD> or 20 <RHD> and body earth.
OK: 1 kΩ or more

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 4.
Go to Step 14.

STEP 4. Check the wiring harness between C-12 AFS-ECU connector and C-124 joint connector (CAN3) for short to earth (resistance measurement).


caution
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal. For details refer to .
  • A digital multimeter should be used. For details refer to .
  • The test wiring harness should be used. For details refer to .
(1)Disconnect joint connector (CAN3), and measure at the wiring harness side.
(2)Resistance between C-124 joint connector (CAN3) terminal No.8 <except 2000-Diesel> or No.7 <2000-Diesel> and body earth
OK: 1 kΩ or more
(3)Resistance between C-124 joint connector (CAN3) terminal No.21 <except 2000-Diesel> or No.20 <2000-Diesel> and body earth
OK: 1 kΩ or more

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 5.
Go to Step 16.

STEP 5. Check the wiring harness between A-04 ABS-ECU connector <vehicles without ASC> or A-58 ASC-ECU connector <vehicles with ASC> and C-124 joint connector (CAN3) for short to earth (resistance measurement).


caution
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal. For details refer to .
  • A digital multimeter should be used. For details refer to .
  • The test wiring harness should be used. For details refer to .
(1)Disconnect joint connector (CAN3), and measure at the wiring harness side.
(2)Resistance between C-124 joint connector (CAN3) terminal No.6 and body earth
OK: 1 kΩ or more
(3)Resistance between C-124 joint connector (CAN3) terminal No.19 and body earth
OK: 1 kΩ or more

Q. Is the check result normal?

YES <A/T or CVT> : Go to Step 6.
YES <M/T (vehicles with electric power steering) > : Go to Step 7.
YES <M/T (vehicles without electric power steering) > : Go to Step 8.
YES <TC-SST> : Go to Step 9.
NO : Go to Step 17.

STEP 6. Check the wiring harness between C-32 A/T-ECU connector <1500> or C-35 CVT-ECU connector <1800, 2000-Petrol> and C-124 joint connector (CAN3) for short to earth (resistance measurement).


caution
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal. For details refer to .
  • A digital multimeter should be used. For details refer to .
  • The test wiring harness should be used. For details refer to .
(1)Disconnect joint connector (CAN3), and measure at the wiring harness side.
(2)Resistance between C-124 joint connector (CAN3) terminal No.7 and body earth
OK: 1 kΩ or more
(3)Resistance between C-124 joint connector (CAN3) terminal No.20 and body earth
OK: 1 kΩ or more

Q. Is the check result normal?

YES <vehicles with electric power steering> : Go to Step 7.
YES <vehicles without electric power steering> : Go to Step 8.
NO : Go to Step 18.

STEP 7. Check the wiring harness between C-114 electric power steering-ECU connector and C-124 joint connector (CAN3) for short to earth (resistance measurement).

  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal. For details refer to .
  • A digital multimeter should be used. For details refer to .
  • The test wiring harness should be used. For details refer to .
(1)Disconnect joint connector (CAN3), and measure at the wiring harness side.
(2)Resistance between C-124 joint connector (CAN3) terminal No.3 and body earth
OK: 1 kΩ or more
(3)Resistance between C-124 joint connector (CAN3) terminal No.14 and body earth
OK: 1 kΩ or more

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 8.
Go to Step 19.

STEP 8. Check the wiring harness between B-09 <except 2000-Diesel> or B-28 <2000-Diesel> engine-ECU connector and C-124 joint connector (CAN3) for short to earth (resistance measurement).


caution
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal. For details refer to .
  • A digital multimeter should be used. For details refer to .
  • The test wiring harness should be used. For details refer to .
(1)Disconnect joint connector (CAN3), and measure at the wiring harness side.
(2)Resistance between C-124 joint connector (CAN3) terminal No.4 and body earth
OK: 1 kΩ or more
(3)Resistance between C-124 joint connector (CAN3) terminal No.15 and body earth
OK: 1 kΩ or more

Q. Is the check result normal?

Check C-128 intermediate connector, and repair if necessary. If the intermediate connector is in good condition, repair the wiring harness between C-03 joint connector (CAN2) and C-124 joint connector (CAN3).
Go to Step 20.

STEP 9. Check the wiring harness between C-58 shift lever connector and C-124 joint connector (CAN3) for short to earth (resistance measurement).


caution
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal. For details refer to .
  • A digital multimeter should be used. For details refer to .
  • The test wiring harness should be used. For details refer to .
(1)Disconnect joint connector (CAN3), and measure at the wiring harness side.
(2)Resistance between C-124 joint connector (CAN3) terminal No.7 and body earth
OK: 1 kΩ or more
(3)Resistance between C-124 joint connector (CAN3) terminal No.20 and body earth
OK: 1 kΩ or more

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 10.
Go to Step 21.

STEP 10. Check the wiring harness between B-09 engine-ECU connector <RALLIART> and A-66 joint connector (CAN4) for short to earth (resistance measurement).


caution
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal. For details refer to .
  • A digital multimeter should be used. For details refer to .
  • The test wiring harness should be used. For details refer to .
(1)Disconnect joint connector (CAN4), and measure at the wiring harness side.
(2)Resistance between A-66 joint connector (CAN4) terminal No.6 and body earth
OK: 1 kΩ or more
(3)Resistance between A-66 joint connector (CAN4) terminal No.19 and body earth
OK: 1 kΩ or more

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 11.
Go to Step 20.

STEP 11. Check the wiring harness between B-125 transmission assembly (TC-SST-ECU) connector and A-66 joint connector (CAN4) for short to earth (resistance measurement).


caution
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal. For details refer to .
  • A digital multimeter should be used. For details refer to .
  • The test wiring harness should be used. For details refer to .
(1)Disconnect joint connector (CAN4), and measure at the wiring harness side.
(2)Resistance between A-66 joint connector (CAN4) terminal No.7 and body earth
OK: 1 kΩ or more
(3)Resistance between A-66 joint connector (CAN4) terminal No.20 and body earth
OK: 1 kΩ or more

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 12.
Go to Step 22.

STEP 12. Check the wiring harness between C-03 joint connector (CAN2) and C-124 joint connector (CAN3) for short to earth (resistance measurement)


caution
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal. For details refer to .
  • A digital multimeter should be used. For details refer to .
  • The test wiring harness should be used. For details refer to .
(1)Disconnect joint connector (CAN3), and measure the resistance at the wiring harness side of joint connector (CAN3).
(2)Resistance between C-124 joint connector (CAN3) terminal No.5 and body earth
OK: 1 kΩ or more
(3)Resistance between C-124 joint connector (CAN3) terminal No.16 and body earth
OK: 1 kΩ or more

Q. Is the check result normal?

Check A-65 intermediate connector, and repair if necessary. If the intermediate connector is in good condition, repair the wiring harness between C-124 joint connector (CAN3) and A-66 joint connector (CAN4).
Check C-128 intermediate connector, and repair if necessary. If the intermediate connector is in good condition, repair the wiring harness between C-03 joint connector (CAN2) and C-124 joint connector (CAN3).

STEP 13. M.U.T.-III CAN bus diagnostics (checking the steering wheel sensor for internal short to earth)


caution Strictly observe the specified wiring harness repair procedure. For details refer to .
Disconnect C-211 steering wheel sensor connector, and diagnose the CAN bus line.


OK: The display of the M.U.T.-III is as shown in the figure.

Q. Does M.U.T.-III screen correspond to the illustration?

Repair the wiring harness between C-211 steering wheel sensor connector and C-03 joint connector (CAN2).

Check the steering wheel sensor connector, and repair if necessary. If the steering wheel sensor connector is in good condition, replace the steering wheel sensor.

STEP 14. M.U.T.-III CAN bus diagnostics (checking the AWC-ECU for internal short to earth)


caution Strictly observe the specified wiring harness repair procedure. For details refer to .
Disconnect C-44 AWC-ECU connector, and diagnose the CAN bus line.

OK: The display of the M.U.T.-III is as shown in the figure.

Q. Does M.U.T.-III screen correspond to the illustration?

Repair the wiring harness between C-44 AWC-ECU connector and C-03 joint connector (CAN2).

Check the AWC-ECU connector, and repair if necessary. If the AWC-ECU connector is in good condition, replace the AWC-ECU.

STEP 15. Check the wiring harness between C-301 ETACS-ECU connector and C-03 joint connector (CAN2) for short to earth (resistance measurement).


caution
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal. For details refer to .
  • A digital multimeter should be used. For details refer to .
  • The test wiring harness should be used. For details refer to .
  • Strictly observe the specified wiring harness repair procedure. For details refer to .
(1)Disconnect ETACS-ECU connector and joint connector (CAN2), and measure at the wiring harness side.
(2)Measure the resistance between C-03 joint connector (CAN2) terminal No.6 and body earth. <CAN_H>
OK: 1 kΩ or more
(3)Measure the resistance between C-03 joint connector (CAN2) terminal No.19 and body earth. <CAN_L>
OK: 1 kΩ or more

Q. Is the check result normal?

Check the ETACS-ECU connector, replace and repair if necessary. If the ETACS-ECU connector is in good condition, ETACS-ECU.
Repair the wiring harness between C-301 ETACS-ECU connector and C-03 joint connector (CAN2).

STEP 16. M.U.T.-III CAN bus diagnostics (checking the AFS-ECU for internal short to earth)


caution Strictly observe the specified wiring harness repair procedure. For details refer to .
Disconnect C-12 AFS-ECU connector, and diagnose the CAN bus line.


OK: The display of the M.U.T.-III is as shown in the figure.

Q. Does M.U.T.-III screen correspond to the illustration?

Repair the wiring harness between C-12 AFS-ECU connector and C-124 joint connector (CAN3).

Check the AFS-ECU connector, and repair if necessary. If the AFS-ECU connector is in good condition, replace the AFS-ECU.

STEP 17. M.U.T.-III CAN bus diagnostics (checking the ABS-ECU <vehicles without ASC> or ASC-ECU <vehicles with ASC> for internal short to earth)


caution Strictly observe the specified wiring harness repair procedure. For details refer to .
Disconnect A-04 ABS-ECU connector <vehicles without ASC> or A-58 ASC-ECU connector <vehicles with ASC>, and diagnose the CAN bus line.


OK: The display of the M.U.T.-III is as shown in the figure.

Q. Does M.U.T.-III screen correspond to the illustration?

Repair the wiring harness between A-04 ABS-ECU connector <vehicles without ASC> or A-58 ASC-ECU connector <vehicles with ASC> and C-124 joint connector (CAN3).

Check the ABS-ECU connector <vehicles without ASC> or ASC-ECU connector <vehicles with ASC>, and repair if necessary. If the ABS-ECU connector <vehicles without ASC> or ASC-ECU connector <vehicles with ASC> is in good condition, replace the ABS-ECU <vehicles without ASC> or ASC-ECU <vehicles with ASC>.

STEP 18. M.U.T.-III CAN bus diagnostics (checking the A/T-ECU <1500> or CVT-ECU <1800, 2000-Petrol> for internal short to earth)


caution Strictly observe the specified wiring harness repair procedure. For details refer to .
Disconnect C-32 A/T-ECU connector <1500> or C-35 CVT-ECU connector <1800, 2000-Petrol>, and diagnose the CAN bus line.

OK: The display of the M.U.T.-III is as shown in the figure.

Q. Does M.U.T.-III screen correspond to the illustration?

Repair the wiring harness between C-32 A/T-ECU connector <1500> or C-35 CVT-ECU connector <1800, 2000-Petrol> and C-124 joint connector (CAN3).

Check the A/T-ECU connector <1500> or CVT-ECU connector <1800, 2000-Petrol>, and repair if necessary. If the A/T-ECU connector <1500> or CVT-ECU connector <1800, 2000-Petrol> is in good condition, replace the A/T-ECU connector <1500> or CVT-ECU connector <1800, 2000-Petrol>.

STEP 19. M.U.T.-III CAN bus diagnostics (checking the electric power steering-ECU for internal short to earth)


caution Strictly observe the specified wiring harness repair procedure. For details refer to .
Disconnect C-114 electric power steering-ECU connector, and diagnose the CAN bus line.

OK: The display of the M.U.T.-III is as shown in the figure.

Q. Does M.U.T.-III screen correspond to the illustration?

Repair the wiring harness between C-114 electric power steering-ECU connector and C-124 joint connector (CAN3).

Check the electric power steering-ECU connector, and repair if necessary. If the electric power steering-ECU connector is in good condition, replace the electric power steering-ECU.

STEP 20. M.U.T.-III CAN bus diagnostics (checking the engine-ECU for internal short to earth)


caution Strictly observe the specified wiring harness repair procedure. For details refer to .
Disconnect B-09 <except 2000-Diesel> or B-28 <2000-Diesel> engine-ECU connector, and diagnose the CAN bus line.


OK: The display of the M.U.T.-III is as shown in the figure.

Q. Does M.U.T.-III screen correspond to the illustration?

YES <except RALLIART> : Repair the wiring harness between B-09 <except 2000-Diesel> or B-28 <2000-Diesel> engine-ECU connector and C-124 joint connector (CAN3).

YES <RALLIART> : Check A-65 intermediate connector, and repair if necessary. If the intermediate connector is in good condition, repair the wiring harness between B-09 engine-ECU connector and A-66 joint connector (CAN4).

NO : Check the engine-ECU connector, and repair if necessary. If the engine-ECU connector is in good condition, replace the engine-ECU.

STEP 21. M.U.T.-III CAN bus diagnostics (checking the shift lever for internal short to earth)


caution Strictly observe the specified wiring harness repair procedure. For details refer to .
Disconnect C-58 shift lever connector, and diagnose the CAN bus line.

OK: The display of the M.U.T.-III is as shown in the figure.

Q. Does M.U.T.-III screen correspond to the illustration?

Repair the wiring harness between C-58 shift lever connector and C-124 joint connector (CAN3).

Check the shift lever connector, and repair if necessary. If the shift lever connector is in good condition, replace the shift lever.

STEP 22. M.U.T.-III CAN bus diagnostics (checking the transmission assembly (TC-SST-ECU) for internal short to earth)


caution Strictly observe the specified wiring harness repair procedure. For details refer to .
Disconnect B-125 transmission assembly (TC-SST-ECU) connector, and diagnose the CAN bus line.

OK: The display of the M.U.T.-III is as shown in the figure.

Q. Does M.U.T.-III screen correspond to the illustration?

Repair the wiring harness between B-125 transmission assembly (TC-SST-ECU) connector and A-66 joint connector (CAN4).

Check the transmission assembly connector, and repair if necessary. If the transmission assembly (TC-SST-ECU) connector is in good condition, replace the transmission assembly.
