Inspection Procedure 41: Stop Lamp Switch System



























COMMENTS ON TROUBLE SYMPTOM




PROBABLE CAUSES



  • Malfunction of brake pedal
  • Malfunction of stop lamp switch system
  • Damaged harness wires and connectors
  • Malfunction of the A/T-ECU

DIAGNOSIS PROCEDURE


STEP 1. Check of the stop lamp on and off


The stop lamps should illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed, and extinguish when released.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 14.
Go to Step 2.

STEP 2. Brake pedal height check


Refer to GROUP 35A - On-vehicle Service .

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 3.
Adjust the brake pedal height.

STEP 3. Stop Lamp Switch Check


Refer to GROUP 35A - Brake Pedal .

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 4.
Replace the stop lamp switch.

STEP 4. Stop lamp bulb check


Check the stop lamp bulb for any abnormality.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 5.
Replace the stop lamp bulb.

STEP 5. Stop lamp switch connector check: D-134


Check the contacting status of terminals.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 6.
Repair the damaged connector.

STEP 6. Voltage measurement at D-134 stop lamp switch connector


Disconnect the connector, and measure the voltage between terminal No.2 and earth at the harness side.
OK: Battery voltage

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 9.
Go to Step 7.

STEP 7. Intermediate connector check: D-241


Check the contacting status of terminals.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 8.
Repair the damaged connector.

STEP 8. Wiring harness check between D-134 stop lamp switch connector terminal No.2 and battery


Check the power supply line for open circuit.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Intermittent malfunction. (Refer to GROUP 00 - How to Cope with Intermittent Malfunction ).
Repair the wiring harness.

STEP 9. Intermediate connector, rear combination lamp connector check: D-222 <LHD>, D-220 <RHD>, D-236, E-06, E-12


Check the contacting status of terminals.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 10.
Repair the damaged connector.

STEP 10. Wiring harness check between D-134 stop lamp switch connector terminal No.1 and E-06 rear combination lamp (RH) connector terminal No.2 as well as E-12 rear combination lamp (LH) connector terminal No.2


Check the output line for short or open circuit.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 11.
Repair the wiring harness.

STEP 11. Wiring harness check between E-06 rear combination lamp (RH) connector terminal No.4 <short wheelbase> or terminal No.5 <long wheelbase> and body earth, as well as between E-12 rear combination lamp (LH) connector terminal No.4 <short wheelbase> or terminal No.5 <long wheelbase> and body earth


Check the earth line for open circuit.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 12.
Repair the wiring harness.

STEP 12. J/C (6), intermediate connector, A/T-ECU connector check: D-113, D-230, D-139


Check the contacting status of terminals.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 13.
Repair the damaged connector.

STEP 13. Wiring harness check between D-134 stop lamp switch connector terminal No.1 and D-139 A/T-ECU connector terminal No.52


Check the output line for short circuit.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 18.
Repair the wiring harness.

STEP 14. Voltage measurement at D-139 A/T-ECU connector


Measure the voltage between D-139 A/T-ECU connector terminal No.52 and earth at the ECU side.
OK:

    Depress the brake pedal: Battery voltage
    Release the brake pedal: 1 V or less

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 17.
Go to Step 15.

STEP 15. Stop lamp switch connector, J/C (6), intermediate connector, A/T-ECU connector check: D-134, D-113, D-230, D-139


Check the contacting status of terminals.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 16.
Repair the damaged connector.

STEP 16. Wiring harness check between D-134 stop lamp switch connector terminal No.1 and D-139 A/T-ECU connector terminal No.52


Check the output line for open circuit.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 18.
Repair the wiring harness.

STEP 17. A/T-ECU connector check: D-139


Check the contacting status of terminals.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 18.
Repair the damaged connector.

STEP 18. M.U.T.-III data list


Item 19: Stop lamp switch (Refer to Service Data Reference Table .)

Q. Is the check result normal?

Intermittent malfunction. (Refer to GROUP 00 - How to Cope with Intermittent Malfunction ).
Replace the A/T-ECU.
